Ultimately, The Maine Food Strategy will be created by and for the people and businesses of Maine.
The Project Coordinating Team is drawn from multiple organizations located across the state. The project’s administrative seat resides at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School.
Currently there is a Process Design Committee (also composed of individuals from across the state) in place for Phases I and II to help create an inclusive and participatory process for the emerging Food Strategy and Network. An Advisory Team, a Steering Committee, and topic-specific Working Groups and Working “Links” (to existing efforts) are in formation.
This project is financially supported through private sources, donations and grants. Funders of the current portion of the work (Phase II Feb 2013 – July 2014) include:
Doree Taylor Foundation
Elmina B. Sewall Foundation
The John Merck Fund
Henry P. Kendall Foundation
The Hudson Foundation of Maine
Maine Community Foundation
Sandy River Charitable Foundation
It is expected that, over the course of 2013 and 2014, working groups, working “links” (to existing projects and programs) and action teams will emerge to focus specifically on:
- Economic Development
- Health & Nutrition
- Food Policy
- Fisheries/Marine Resources
- Commodity Groups
- Food Service / Institutional Food
- Food Access & Food Security
- Farm/Food Labor
- Processing, Distribution, Transportation
- Finance and Capital
- Emergency Preparedness
- Horticulture/Nursery Stock
- Small-scale Food Production / Grow-Your-Own
- Land Tenure/Land Access
